Description
This is a beautiful necklace featuring two types of gem silica, Peruvian blue opal and green tourmaline. The center bead is a light blue gem silica with small sprays of green in it that came from Peru. I have only found one piece that was this light blue color as most of the material from this mine was much darker blue. The center bead is framed by two rounded triangular pieces of green tourmaline that pick up on the small green areas in the center bead. The second beads from the center, are gem silica from Mexico that have a deeply saturated blue color. And finally, the outermost beads are Peruvian blue opal with classic pale blue color.
I have only seen the Peruvian gem silica one year at the gem shows and most of the material was not gem grade in my opinion. The piece in this necklace is extraordinary with its light blue color. The gem silica from Mexico is no longer available and the two beads in this piece have some of the most saturated Caribbean Ocean blue color. They have slightly different shades of blue but they were cut from the same piece adjacent to each other. The Peruvian blue opal is also no longer being mined and the material for this piece was purchased long ago.
The gemstone beads are separated by silver saucer beads and the rest of the strand utilizes solid Thai Hill Tribe solid silver beads that are actually 97%-98% fine silver (higher than Sterling at 92.5%). The smaller size of the beads give the illusion of a light piece but due to the fact that they are solid beads and not hollow the necklace has a very rich feel with over 31 grams of silver.
The length of this necklace (17 1/4″) was designed to be choker length or near choker length for most women. The first five photos were taken in bright sunlight and show how the gemstones light up. The final photo was taken in more subdued light.
The center bead is approx. 12.6 mm in diameter and 9.2 mm wide. Please see photos with the older U.S. dime for size/scale or the photo of the necklace on the display “neck”.
The necklace is strung on high-quality high-strength coated wire and each side of the necklace is double-crimped for security and durability.
