Description
This is an 18k solid gold ring with a deep red natural ruby. The piece is based on Balinese designs with a lot of intricate granulation around the bezel and a single row of graduated gold balls around the band.
The ruby in this ring is from the Winza mine in Tanzania and has deep red color. It is cut in a classic emerald cut rectangle and is bright and glassy. There is one tiny dark spot on the gemstone that is nearly imperceptible because it is at one corner of the stone. This dark spot is actually blue probably from a trace element like titanium and if the entire gemstone were this color it would be a blue sapphire. There are also some minor surface imperfections which are from the natural crystal growth patterns, but this is common for natural material. Rubies that have been heated are commonly “glass filled” which like the phrase implies these imperfections are filled with glass when it is heated at high temperatures and most buyers are unaware of this enhancement. If you are looking for a “perfect” looking ruby you might want to buy one that is heated/glass filled at a mall store. If you want a real natural ruby and don’t have $40,000 this might be one to consider.
The ring at its widest point is approx. 3/8” wide (at the front – measured top to bottom) and the band is a little over 3/16” wide at the back. (See photo with older U.S. dime for size/scale.)
